Methodist Church Records in Oregon

By Connie Lenzen, CGSM

In 1831, two Flathead and two Nez Perce Indians from the Rocky Mountains went to St. Louis to request "BlackRobes" for their people. This request was big news in United States religious newspapers. From the December 31, 1831 issue of the Annals of the Association of the Propagation of the Faith, Bishop Rosati of St. Louis wrote:

Some three months ago four Indians who live across the Rocky Mountains near the Columbia River (Clark's Fork of the Columbia) arrived at St. Louis. After visiting General Clark who, in his celebrated travels, has visited their country and has been well treated by them, they came to see our church and appeared to be exceedingly well pleased with it. Unfortunately there was no one who understood their language. Some time afterwards two of them fell dangerously ill....

The first missionary to answer the call was Jason Lee, a Methodist. He received a commission and arrived in Oregon in 1834 with the Nathaniel Wyeth overland party. The Lee group consisted of: the Rev. Daniel Lee, a nephew; Cyrus Shepard and Philip L. Edwards, teachers; and Courtney M. Walker, clerical assistant. They located north of present-day Salem by the Willamette River. This area proved to be unhealthy, so they later relocated to Chemeketa, near Salem.

A copy of the "Mision Record Book, Methodist Episcopal Church, Willamette Station, Oregon Territory, North America, commenced 1834" is located at Oregon Historical Society in Portland, Oregon (Mss 1224, Methodist Missions).

This book includes admission records, marriages, and baptisms.
